Nuno Silas (Maputo, 1988).  

Nuno Silas is a multidisciplinary researcher and artist, focusing on curating and the history of museum collections. In April 2024, he was admitted as a PhD Candidate in History and Philosophy of Science, with specialization on Museology, at the University of Évora, a IHC (Institute for Contemporary History) hub. He holds a BA Degree from the School of Arts and Design (Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Caldas da Rainha) and he is a finalist of the MA in African Verbal and Visual Arts at the University of Bayreuth (UB). At UB, he started collaborating in research projects, such as “Black Atlantic Revisited – African and South American UNESCO - World Heritage Sites and ‘Shadowed Spaces’ of Performative Memory” and “Multiple Artworks – Multiple Indian Ocean”. Currently, he is a curator and artistic director of the project Black Skin, White Masks: The Black Body in Presence at Galerias Municipais (EGEAC, Lisbon), and curator of the exhibition project Memórias Difíceis e Descolonização in Portugal (Difficult Memories and Decolonization in Portugal), organized by Plano Nacional das Artes (PNA), Lisbon in collaboration with Paulo Freire Institute Berlin, and Goethe Institute Lisbon. The project, taking place in 2024-25, deals with the work of memory through the Arts in Portugal. In April 2024, he was an Invited Guest of the workshop: Conflict and Collaboration in Digital African Spaces, at the Iwalewahaus (UB), presenting his ongoing research project: Hearing More Than Sounds: Restitution and Circulation of Memory, Sounds and Visual Movements of Resistance from Mozambique. This project investigates elements and narratives of Mozambican post-conflict propaganda, based on sonority and visual movements of resistance and the Mozambican's imagination today. Furthermore, he has collaborated with the Natural Museum Berlin and the Humboldt Forum Berlin with the project “Metamorphosis”, under the motto “a world in which coloniality no longer has a place”. He has received various awards and collaborated in group projects and exhibitions internationally: in 2022 have been pointed by Galerias Municipais of Lisbon as a Co-curator an Exhibition Black Skin, White Masks. The Black Body in Presence; in 2024, the University of Western Cape (UWC) awarded me a Museum Fellowship for redefinition of curatorial practice and museology method as well as art history on contemporary art discourse. In the same year, he was nominated at Mozal Arts and Culture Awards in Mozambique by Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Mozambique and the Kulungwana art gallery. His work received an Honorable Mentional by the Committee. In 2023, he started a collaboration with Rampa Art Gallery (Porto-Portugal) and Centro Cultural Franco Mozambicano, for his research exhibition project - Joni: Portrait of Mozambican Miners and Families in South Africa Revisited.

He completed the Visual Arts at the National School of Visual Arts (Mozambique) and has a degree in Fine Arts from the Higher School of Arts and Design (ESAD.cr) In Portugal.

He currently attends the African Verbal and Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies in Master’s program at the University of Bayreuth, where he holds a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation(Portugal). From this time, he participates in several projects of artistic intervention and exhibiting internationally in Mozambique, Portugal, Germany and Cape Verde.

Nuno Silas is multidisciplinary artist his practice includes performance, painting, drawing, photography, Video. In his complex installations explores the manipulation and recon- stitution of everyday objects as well as historical objects.

In his work, he chooses to use cardboard, fabrics, and other materials found that are spoils of contemporary society.

I am a Mozambican artist and master student, currently based in Germany. Extremely motivated to constant continually my skills and grow profession- ally. I am confident in my ability and creativity to come up with inspiring ideas for new art projects.
